What is Estate Planning?
An Estate Plan is a specific plan that uses various legal tools and the law to control how one's property is used during life and especially upon death.
The goal of any estate plan is efficiency. Efficiency means minimizing taxes, reducing costs, mitigating in-fighting, and protecting the client's legacy from creditors, predators, and divorce.
From the attorney's perspective, estate planning is a discipline. Meaning, there is no "estate planning" law. To be an effective estate planner requires knowledge of many different bodies of law, such as property, probate, trusts, incapacity, public benefits, divorce, business, and especially tax.
Estate planning attorneys use a broad range of tools to design an efficient estate plan, such as Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, asset titling, death beneficiary designations, entities (LPs, LLPs, LLCs, Corporations), promissory notes, installment sales, and insurance.
The Law Office of Richard R. Sprague designs plans for modest estates and high net worth estates, business owners, and clients with charitable intent. We bring together practical experience and broad subject matter expertise to meet the client's estate planning needs.
